Cloud Decks and Turbines for Saxophone Quartet

Cloud Decks and Turbines is a summer highway drive up U.S. Route 84 from Sweetwater to Lubbock, Texas in three parts. Day View, Sunset View, and Night View. The Day View juxtaposes the mechanical and industrial side of the Panhandle, from the wind turbines, train tracks and oil derricks with the beautiful simple landscape and wispy cirrus clouds. The Day View lures you in with its meditative development. The Sunset View takes you by the hand into the stunning and radiant golden hour into the dramatic West Texas sunset. The rays of sun melt away the horizon into the Night View. Here, the only light is the random flashes from the wind turbines, cell towers, trains, and highway traffic. This brocade of lights blends into the city, powered by the wind turbines, train tracks and oil derricks miles outside of town. Cloud Decks and Turbines was written for the Aruna Quartet in the Spring of 2020.
