Magnapinna Squid for Solo Tuba

Magnapinna Squid was written during the weeks before the lockdown in 2020. This huge, looming, darkness crept its way into every facet of our lives, and I thought this innocent piece about some weird creature could be an escape from that. Turns out, I was looking this monster square in the eyes. The more I look back on Magnapinna Squid the more similarities I can pull between this piece and the lives we lived during lock down. Magnapinna Squids, or Bigfin Squids, are a group of deep-sea creatures with tentacles that are believed to reach 8 meters or 26 feet in length each. Only juvenile and immature Magnapinna Squids have been sampled or studied so much is still to be learned about these fascinating giants. My piece explores the depths where they can be found; there are moments of deep darkness and the unknown, as well as moments of beauty, awe, and light.
