Quartet No. 1 for Saxophones
i. Rabbit
ii. Hare
iii. Bunny
iv. Rabbit
Rabbit, Hare, Bunny, Rabbit. It's a bit of a non-sequitur and a nice little four word poem. These animals symbolize a wide array of feelings, acts, people, and places. They can be sexy, they can be cute, it can be a reference to drugs or life-altering events, luck or the wild. These images contradict each other and at the same time embolden each other. This piece portrays someone who fits all these definitions and beyond. Amanda Lepore. She is one of the most stunning people on earth, she took her body and became a work of art. She was a part of the Club Kid scene, one of my biggest inspirations as a composer, RuPaul, Leigh Bowery, Lady Bunny, Amanda– They wear outrageous outfits and pull stunts and tricks at parties. As wild as these performers are, they still go home and do the same routines as every other person. Amanda loves, listens, laughs, and lives in a world of her own.
Quartet No. 1 was composed for Nox, based out of Texas Tech University where I did my undergraduate studies and where I am currently working on my doctoral degree in composition. This school made me love the saxophone. I was lucky enough to be there at the same time as Aruna and have been blown away by the possibilities of the quartet ever since. I now have 6 works for saxophones, Friends of Judy (2019) for quartet and piano, Cloud Decks and Turbines (2019) for quartet, Moll Dyer (2020) for quartet, Crimson Silhouettes (2021) for quartet, Rotations II (2021) for saxophone ensemble, and now Quartet No. 1 (2025). As well as 4 other works with saxophone, Shell Quintet (2022) for Low Reeds and Piano, Who Has Seen the Wind (2022) for tenor sax, bassoon, Sunken Body (2024) for reed quintet or wind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, alto sax, and bassoon) as well as my Octet (2026) for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and sax quartet.
